Mr. Adolphus Whyte, founder of Metropolitan Utilities started his apprenticeship in the 1950's at the St. Kitts sugar factory. He subsequently worked at the electricity department for some years and then at the new Joseph Nathaniel France hospital where he worked on the electrical insulation in the late 60's. Mr. Whyte then moved to a television plant called Curtis Mathis in the mid 70's. All this time he educated himself by doing City and Guilds of London Institute courses, while also working for himself doing electrical insulation on many houses, as well as commercial and industrial business in St. Kitts.
While doing some of his private work, Mr. Adolphus Whyte took both of his sons Anthony and Patrick with him to assist him on the weekends, school holidays and sometimes afterschool. In 1979 he started working for himself permanently when he started doing electrical insulations at what was then the Golden Rock Airport. This is when he came up with the name Metropolitan Utilities, a name he thought would be perfect and which would cover electrical insulations, air conditioning, refrigeration and the landscaping services he provided. In 1980 his two sons joined him on a permanent basis after they finished college. Anthony, the oldest son majored in air conditioning and refrigeration, while Patrick majored in basic engineering electrical insulation, motor rewinding and electronics.
In 1985 Mr. Adolphus Whyte passed away leaving Anthony and Patrick to continue the business. In 1989 Anthony the oldest of the sons took up residency in North America with his wife but returns occasionally to assist Patrick with the business. In 1992, Patrick married Yvette Tyson and since then she has become a very integral part of the company functioning as the office manager and accountant. Over the years, an ever growing number of apprentices have worked for the company.
One such person is Jermaine Lewis who started with the company in the mid 1990's. He then left to study electrical engineering in the United States, but was encouraged to then pursue computers (Information Technology) and got certified as an electrician. He returned after studying and did a stint with Mac Pennies computers before returning to Metropolitan Utilities where he continues to make significant contribution as a senior staff member and partner.
Metropolitan Utilities has evolved over the years from electrical insulations, air conditioning and refrigeration maintenance to a broad spectrum of services including computer repair, computer networking, security installation, self-monitoring automatic doors and gates installations, smart homes installation, installation, maintenance and repairs of all sizes of generators and Uninterruptible power supply systems.
